We are excited to announce that Alex Smith has joined Shiru in the role of Program Manager.

Shiru’s mission is to feed people sustainably by leveraging machine learning and precision biology to identify and create ideal food proteins. Alex’s unique range of cross-functional experiences will enable the continued expansion of Shiru’s commercial strategy and operations capabilities as the company looks to commercialize its new ingredient discoveries.

Alex received her MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and her BS in management from Boston College. She has a range of experiences across strategy, operations, corporate finance, venture capital, and innovation. After holding various roles in finance at GE Capital, Alex joined the business operations team at GE Ventures, GE’s VC and innovation platform. There, she focused on driving alignment and operational rigor across the organization and managed a variety of cross-functional projects. She has recently spent time in the alternative protein space, working on the investments team at Bluestein Ventures, supporting strategy at Artemys Foods, and developing market research for the Good Food Institute.

“Food sits at the intersection of so many critically important fields: sustainability, health, and social justice, among others. Because of this intersectionality, I firmly believe that working to transform our food system into one that’s more healthful, sustainable, and equitable is a unique opportunity to affect maximal positive change. I’m thrilled to begin my journey at Shiru to pursue that mission and am even more thrilled to join such a talented and collaboratively-minded team. I also could not be more excited to join a female-founded and led startup!!”

Outside of the office, you can find Alex cooking, attempting to meditate, catching up on her never-ending backlog of podcast episodes, relaxing by the nearest body of water, or spending time with her two rescue dogs, Bagel and Bialy.
