We are excited to announce that Janelle Myers has joined the Shiru team in the role of product developer.
Shiru’s mission is to feed people sustainably by leveraging machine learning and precision biology to identify and create ideal food proteins, and Janelle’s experience in food science and product development will help bring these ingredients to life in target food systems.
Janelle studied chemistry and integrated science at Northwestern University, then worked in informal science education during the week while making pies and ice cream at a restaurant on the weekends. She finally discovered a field that united her passions and started working in food science, first at Chew in Boston and then at the bakery manufacturer Wiley Road Foods. After completing a master’s degree in food science from FIPDes and AgroParisTech, Janelle took advantage of already living in Paris to complete pastry training at Ferrandi. She comes to Shiru most recently from Simple Mills, where she leveraged her combination of science and culinary experience to develop better-for-you snack products.
“I love working at the intersection of science and culinary, and I’m so excited to join the Shiru team and explore the ways that our products can improve all different kinds of food. I’m motivated by trying to understand why food works the way it does and linking the molecular-scale interactions to our eating experience. The Shiru team has deep expertise at every step of this process and I can’t wait to learn from everyone as we work toward a more sustainable and more delicious food system together.”
When she’s not developing products, Janelle is often still in the kitchen. She loves baking birthday cakes for friends, trying new recipes, and spending time with friends around the table. When she’s out of the kitchen, Janelle loves running, hiking, board games, and training her rescue dog Aspen not to be afraid of toothbrushes.
