We’re Shiru

Shiru is a serious company (with a witty edge!) on a mission to redesign the food system from the molecule up. No need to be modest here, we work with some of the brightest minds in food, science, and technology. And we’re constantly learning, growing, and flourishing. Together, we’re on a journey that is as unique and diverse as the people taking part.

We’re curious, ambitious, and a tad bit obsessed with our mission.

Lawrence Lee, PhD, MBA

Chief Technology Officer

Lawrence joined Shiru in 2020, where he built the computational infrastructure needed to apply machine learning and data science to protein food ingredients. He has since helped Shiru bridge the divide between in silico protein predictions and in vitro screening assays to design the first ever active learning pipeline for ingredient discovery. Lawrence has 14 years of experience in the biotech space building algorithms and pipelines to process DNA sequencing data and match drugs to patients. When not thinking about software architecture and proteins, Lawrence enjoys drinking tropical cocktails on a beach with his family and bulldog.

Ranjani Varadan, PhD

Megan Pittman

VP of People

Megan, a devoted dog mom and wine drinker – joined Shiru as our VP of People in an effort to leave a mark bigger than herself on this planet, and to build one of the most talented and innovative teams in the biotech space. Prior to Shiru, she led the people function at the industry leading fintech Policygenius, scaled e-commerce company Stitch Fix just post-IPO and helped establish the values-driven people function at Blue Bottle Coffee (whilst perpetually caffeinated). Professionally, she’s passionate about scaling & prioritizing equity, owning your voice & being authentic, and empowering employees to grow in the career that brings them the most happiness. Personally, you can find her & Rubes (aka Ruby or the Rubinator, a 15 year old Australian Shepherd) road tripping through National Parks or drinking exceptional bottles of wine with friends.

Our board of directors

Chuck Templeton

Chuck is a self-described knucklehead who happens to love entrepreneurship. He was one for a while and now does his best to help them as a partner at S2G Ventures, where he tries to help them make fewer, or at least different mistakes than he made. But not just any entrepreneur will do – he wants to work with people who are making the world a better place with their business models, product offerings, and impact solutions. He knows that in order to build a competitive world-class organization, impact has to be built into the DNA. Human capital, natural capital, financial capital, government regulations and today’s consumer all favor businesses that improve human health, planet health, and are financially viable. Chuck is lucky enough to have two amazing daughters, is adopting a 10 year old boy, and has an amazing wife. To relax, he loves to run.

She has worked with some of the world’s most audacious and visionary CEOs — such as Elon Musk, Patrick O. Brown, and now Dr. Jasmin Hume of Shiru! Rachel loves being outside with her family, and she starts nearly every day with a walk in nature, accompanied by her faithful German shedder rescue, Molly. She loves cooking for a crowd, including impromptu events with “Iron Chef”-like constraints — in which case she’ll probably dig into her stash of marinated artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, homemade preserved lemons, and crazy pastas.
